Why Medicare Supplements?
When can I change my Medicare Supplement plan?
You can shop Medicare Supplement plans anytime. However, outside the initial 6-month Medicare supplement open enrollment window (Part B effective date), you will be asked medical questions and may not qualify. Unfortunately, some people could be with one plan for life depending on health. Therefore, it's important to pick the right plan and insurance company, not the cheapest.
Why Change Medicare Supplement Plans?
You will see increases in premiums as you age and you could save money on the exact same plan. Here are a few examples:
Annual Election Period (10/15-12/7)
Medicare supplements do not have an annual election period like Medicare Advantage and Prescription Drug plans. If you're happy with your plan and premium, you don't need to do anything. However, if you want to drop your Medigap plan and enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan, this is your window. Just remember, you may never be eligible for another Medigap plan again.
If you have a Medigap plan, you likely have a stand-alone prescription drug plan. This is typically the only time you can change plans without a special election period. It's always a good idea to shop plans, especially if any prescriptions have changed.
Open Enrollment Period (1/1-3/31)
If you have buyers remorse over a Medicare Advantage Plan, you can drop it and apply for a Medicare Supplement with a Stand-Alone Prescription Drug plan. Do not drop your Medicare Advantage Plan until you apply and get the approval from your Medicare Supplement company. You can also change Medicare Advantage Plans or simply go to Original Medicare during this election period.
Medicare Supplement Plan G, N or High Deductible G (HDG) 2024
Medicare Supplement Plans G & N are the two most popular plans. High Deductible G is the best kept secret that you may have never heard about because your agent cares about their comission needs vs your financial needs. See video right below.
Plan G vs Plan High Deductible G (HDG) and how a 6% annual rate increase over 16 years could effect you. All the details about Medigaps best kept secret plan.
Learn how you can save $26,493 in premium over 16 years with plan HDG. Like what you see? I have an entire section below on HDG.
Why it's really not a High Deductible, a few objections with HDG, competition, and some plans to consider.
You are likely coming off an Obamacare or Group Health Plan and you had a high deductible. This high deductible is really a cost sharing and significantly better than what you had with your inidividual or group plan. In addition, you'll learn about some plans that you can choose from with HDG. One carrier has Silver Sneakers (may not be available in your area).

Medicare Supplements & Pre-Existing Conditions
In the majority of situations, you will not have to worry about Preexisting conditions. However, if you have a lapse in coverage of 63+ days, they may apply. We address this common concern and how they apply to Medicare Supplements.
Plan HDG + Hospital/Cancer/SNF): A simple way to supplement your HDG plan at a much lower cost than Plan G
A great solution if you love the idea of HDG, but want to alleviate some of the deductible with a supplemental hospital, cancer, & SNF insurance plan. Depending how it's tailored, your all in cost could be lower than Plan N and significantly lower than Plan G. The supplemental carrier has never had a rate increase with this product to date.

We have individual dental & vision plans. Learn about the differences between these plans in this video. Scroll down to my dental section for a no-obligation quote. It takes less than a minute.

Summary:
G, N & HDG Medigap plans are all excellent choices and will serve you well. However, Medigap plan HDG is not mentioned to many because it's the lowest cost plan. It's actually the plan that would make Insurance Agents the lowest commission of any plan available.
It's quite simple, you pay Original Medicare on Parts A & B until you reach $2490. Medicare negotiates rates well and reaching the deductible is difficult. If you are a healthy minded individual that likes to keep money in your pocket verse the insurance company, it makes a great choice.
This info was produced in 2022. The same principles still apply, but the 2024 HDG cost sharing is $2800 vs $2490. Plan G would start at $126 vs $120 (same company) and HDG would start at $42.19 vs $34 (different company). If you would like current rates and a no-obligation quote in your area, click below.
