Medicare Supplements 101
Medicare Supplement plans sometimes referred to as Medigap plans provide peace of mind. Original Medicare Parts A & B pay first and they must both be in place to get a plan. The Medicare Supplement you choose will help pick up much or all of the remaining approved Medicare costs. If you aged into Medicare before 1/1/2020, Plan F is the most comprehensive plan and it picks up all the cost. If you age in after 1/1/2020, Plan G is the most comprehensive and you will have some cost sharing on the Part B deductible.
I have informative video's below: 1. The three most popular plans overview. 2. My favorite plan-High Deductible G. 3. Top Medicare supplement declines. 4. Why pre-existing conditions are typically not a concern.
Why Medicare Supplements?
When can I change my Medicare Supplement?
You can shop Medicare Supplement plans anytime. The kicker: outside the initial 6-month Medicare supplement open enrollment window (Part B effective date), you will be asked medical questions and may not qualify (see top Medicare supplement decline video below). Unfortunately, some people could be with one plan for life depending on health. Therefore, it's important to pick the right plan and not the cheapest.
Why Switch?
You will see increases in premiums as you age (see Medigap G vs HDG Rate Inflation Video below). I have literally saved people $100's to $2724 in a year. Who should get a quote or consider switching? 1. You're new to Medicare 2. You've been with the same carrier for 5+ years. 3. You have Plan F and you consider yourself healthy. 4. You have no idea what plan you have or who helped you get it. You will have me from start to finish and any questions along the way.
Medicare Supplement Plan G, N or High Deductible G (HDG)?
These plans are the ones chosen the most. There is a plan for each budget and risk appetite. Detailed info below on Plans G & High Deductible G.

Medicare Supplements & Pre-Existing Conditions
In the majority of situations, you will not have to worry about them. However, if you have a lapse in coverage somehow of 63+ days, they may apply. We address this common concern and how they apply to Medicare Supplements only.
Ameritas Dental & Vision Plans
Unfortunately, Medicare does not cover dental and vision. Medicare does cover diseases of the eye ie; cataracts, glaucoma, etc. While I'm not a huge fan of vision insurance. I personally have and like the Ameritas plan. It's a robust network and it has nice benefits. Click on this link for a quote.
If you like simplicity, standardized plans across the country and predictable outcomes, Medicare Supplements are for you. If you don't mind navigating networks (HMO, PPO, PFFS) paying copays (some large), not being able to use your plan anywhere, and large max out of pockets in many areas, then Medicare Advantage may be for you.
After 15 years of helping people with Medicare, the only gripe with Medicare Supplements is premium increases. Medicare Advantage it's doctors & hospitals cancelling contracts with the network, troubles finding specialty care and navigating networks as you get up in years and possibly needing to switch plans annually due to significant changes in plan design.
I'm a big proponent of Medicare Supplement High Deductible G and you will see a few examples why if you continue to explore my site. It's actually the plan that I make the least amount of money on as an agent. If you're in good to excellent health, I don't think there is a more valuable plan.
Who is this plan ideal for?
Who is it not ideal for?
Summary:
G, N & HDG Medigap plans are all excellent choices and will serve you well. However, Medigap plan HDG is not mentioned to many because it's the lowest cost plan. It's actually the plan that would make Insurance Agents the lowest commission of any plan available.
It's quite simple, you pay Original Medicare on Parts A & B until you reach $2490. Medicare negotiates rates well and reaching the deductible is difficult. If you are a healthy minded individual that likes to keep money in your pocket verse the insurance company, it makes a great choice.

Never cancel your current policy until your new policy is effective. Any changes to your health prior to coverage taking place needs to be reported to the insurance company, which may result in a policy not being issued.
