Why Medicare Supplements?

  • Medicare Supplements provide predictable healthcare spending outcomes.  They have low out of pocket exposure outside of your premium.
  • You can choose any doctor or hospital that accepts Medicare. 100% of hospitals and approximately 95% of physicians nationwide.
  • No referrals necessary, simplifying seeing a specialist of your choice.  Especially in highly skilled fields.
  • No Prior Authorizations.
  • If travelling, you don't have to worry. You can use your plan anywhere without having to make sure you're in the network.
  • Standardized plans across the country.  It's the same plan no matter what company you choose or where you live.
  • You may change plans anytime.

When can I change my Medicare Supplement plan?

You can shop Medicare Supplement plans anytime. However, outside the initial 6-month Medicare supplement open enrollment window (Part B effective date), you will be asked medical questions and may not qualify (see top Medicare supplement decline video below). Unfortunately, some people could be with one plan for life depending on health. Therefore, it's important to pick the right plan and not the cheapest.

Why Change Medicare Supplement Plans?

You will see increases in premiums as you age.  I have saved people a lot of money by swithching plans after a few years due to choosing a carrier that had large rate increases.  Who should get a quote or consider switching?

Here are a few reasons why:

  1. You've been with the same carrier for or more years with significant increases.
  2. You have Plan F that is only available to those that aged into Medicare before 1/1/2020.  Plan G makes more sense 99% of the time.
  3. You have a Medicare Advantage plan.  The time to apply for a plan is 10/1-11/15 ideally, 12/7 at the latest (Annual Election Period) or during Open Enrollment 1/1 - 3/3 (DO NOT DROP A MEDICARE ADVANTAGE PLAN UNTIL YOUR MEDICARE SUPPLEMENT IS APPROVED).
  4. You have no idea what plan you have or who helped you get it.
  5. You want an agent and not a call center helping you.

Annual Election Period (10/15-12/7)

Medicare supplements do not have an annual election period like Medicare Advantage and Prescription Drug plans. If you're happy with your plan and premium, you don't need to do anything. However, if you want to drop your Medigap plan and enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan, this is your window.  Just remember, you may never be eligible for another Medigap plan again.

If you have a Medigap plan, you likely have a stand-alone prescription drug plan. You can change prescription plans this time of the year.  It's always a good idea to shop plans, especially if any prescriptions have changed.

Medicare Supplement Plan G, N or High Deductible G (HDG)?

Medicare Supplement Plans G & N are the two most popular plans. High Deductible G is the best kept secret that you may have never heard about.  See video right below.

Plan G vs Plan High Deductible G (HDG) and how a 6% annual rate increase over 16 years could effect you.

Learn how you can save $26,493 in premium over 16 years with plan HDG. Like what you see? I have an entire section below on HDG.

Why I don't really like calling it a High Deductible, it's more of a cost share.

You are likely coming off an Obamacare or Group Health Plan and you had a high deductible. This high deductible is significantly different and better than what you had with your inidividual or group plan.

Medicare Supplements & Pre-Existing Conditions

In the majority of situations, you will not have to worry about Preexisting conditions. However, if you have a lapse in coverage of 63+ days, they may apply. We address this common concern and how they apply to Medicare Supplements.

Plan HDG + Hospital Indemnity

A great solution if you love the idea of HDG, but want to buffer some of the deductible with a supplemental hospital and cancer insurance plan.  Depending how it's tailored, your all in cost will likely be lower than Plan N and definitely lower than G when you paired with HDG.  Everyone should have a Hospital & Cancer plan if you're stuck with Medicare Advantage plans. I have guaranteed issue Hospital plans (not Cancer).

Dental Insurance or Discount Plan (not insurance)?

We have individual and family dental & vision plans. Learn about the differences between these plans in this video.  Get a quote in seconds by visiting my dental insurance and discount website.

Why I always start with Medigap plan HDG

  • Quite simply, it's the least expensive and everyone should know about it. If I were aging into Medicare today, this is the plan I would get.  As a side note; of every possible plan I could sell, this is the one I make the least amount of money on.  Last, the $26,493 is a hypothetical savings example. Savings can vary by many rating and price increase factors.
  • Original Medicare always pays first with Medicare Supplements, and they negotiate rates extremely well. You can see for yourself using Medicare's Procedure Price Lookup.
  • HDG mitigates the uncapped cost Medicare could present without a plan at a very low premium.
  • If you're familiar with Medicare Advantage plans, the $2490 high deductible on HDG is significantly less than most max out of pockets on those plans.  The high deductible does increase each year ($2700/2023).
  • Compared to the most expensive and comprehensive Medigap Plan G, you can save $26,493 in premium over 16 years. At the current deductible of $2490 (2022), you could reach it 10.6 times and still save over Medigap plan G (see illustration).

Who is this plan ideal for?

  • Healthy minded individuals in good to great health.
  • People who understand high deductible plans and like to keep money in their pockets verse the insurance company.
  • You understand a few bad years aren't going to affect the big savings picture illustrated.
  • You may be intrigued by Medicare Advantage plans but want the flexibility to see any doctor or hospital without network restrictions.
  • If you understand underwriting, the illustration presents a 6% compounding rate increase. Medigap plan HDG will likely be lower due to the healthy population it attracts. Medigap plan G will likely be higher due do the unhealthier population it attracts.  It's called adverse selection.

Who is it not ideal for?

  • Finances aren't a concern, and you simply want the most comprehensive plan available.  Go with Plan G.
  • Aging into Medicare with chronic and/or terminal illnesses.  If you have any of the conditions in the Medicare Supplement Decline video above, Plan G or N may suit you better.

Summary:

G, N & HDG Medigap plans are all excellent choices and will serve you well. However, Medigap plan HDG is not mentioned to many because it's the lowest cost plan. It's actually the plan that would make Insurance Agents the lowest commission of any plan available.

It's quite simple, you pay Original Medicare on Parts A & B until you reach $2490. Medicare negotiates rates well and reaching the deductible is difficult.  If you are a healthy minded individual that likes to keep money in your pocket verse the insurance company, it makes a great choice.
